Newport Student Arrested on Way to School

The teen and a passenger stopped in Middletown for sodas, struck a car in traffic and left the scene of the accident.

MIDDLETOWN, RI — A 17-year-old male was arrested May 4 at 9 a.m. on West Main Road in Middletown. His name is being withheld because of his age. The juvenile is being charged with a misdemeanor for failing to stop after an accident with property damage to another vehicle.

According to Middletown police, the victim called officers at 8:17 a.m. after a hit and run accident on East Main Road near Forest Avenue. She told police she was on East Main and ready to turn into Forest when her car was struck from behind. She pulled over, but the other car, which she described as a silver sedan, kept going. It had damage to the right side bumper. The woman said she was not injured but would go to Newport Hospital to be checked out.

The officer later saw a silver car with bumper damage traveling on West Main Road and pulled the driver over. The 17-year-old said the bumper damage had happened that morning on East Main Road. He said a driver cut him off, and he hit her car. He said he kept driving because he did not know what to do. After the accident, he picked up a friend. They went to the gas station to buy sodas before they went to school in Newport.

Police took the passenger to school. They arrested the driver who was released to his mother later that morning.
