Newport Teen, 14, Charged For Bringing Marijuana To School

A 14-year-old was charged with a felony for bringing marijuana into the Thompson School. He told police he found it at Miantonomi Park.

NEWPORT, RI — A teacher at the Thompson School smelled something like a skunk in her third floor classroom around 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday. She advised another teacher, and they found the odor was coming from a locker. The vice-principal opened the locker and found a backpack inside. The backpack contained two baggies with marijuana inside, a scale and other paraphernalia used for smoking marijuana, police allege. They arrested the juvenile, whose name is not being released, due to his age.

Police contacted the youngster's mother, who came to the police station. During the interview, the 14-year-old said he was at Miantonomi Park on June 11 to play football and found these items outside the tower. He put them in his backpack. He could not explain why he did not tell an adult or why he brought the marijuana to school but told police he did not give any of the marijuana away. He was charged with manufacturing, possessing and delivering Schedule I and II drugs. The boy was released to his mother's custody with restrictions she was to keep him in "lockdown," pending a Family Court appearance on Thursday.
