Newport Woman Wins $50,000 In Rhode Island Lottery

Lottery officials said the woman won $50,000 on a "Rhode Island Red" instant ticket she bought at the 7-Eleven on Memorial Boulevard.

NEWPORT, RI — A Newport woman had some luck on her side when she hit big on a scratch ticket, Rhode Island Lottery officials said Tuesday.

Lottery officials said the woman won $50,000 on a "Rhode Island Red" instant ticket she bought at the 7-Eleven on Memorial Boulevard in Newport.

According to lottery officials, the woman always scans the barcodes on her scratch tickets to see if they’re winners before she even scratches them.

When she scanned her ticket, she saw the message to claim her prize at the Rhode Island Lottery headquarters in Cranston and figured she had won a couple thousand dollars. But after scratching the numbers on her ticket, she realized she had won $50,000.
