Newport's Miantonomi Tower Open For Veteran's Day

The public is invited to climb the tower from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

NEWPORT, RI — In honor of Veteran's Day, members of the public are invited to climb Miantonomi Tower on Monday afternoon. Climbing the tower has become an annual tradition for the city.

The tower will be open from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Adults and families are welcome to climb, though children must be accompanied by an adult. Stone steps inside lead to a narrow, metal staircase that brings visitors to the top observation deck. The highest point in Newport, climbers can often see all the way to Providence or Block Island if skies are clear.

Miantonomi Tower was built as a memorial to World War I veterans, the foundation of Veteran's Day. In 1919, the country first celebrated Armistice Day, marking the anniversary of the end of the Great War.
