Newport's Touro Synagogue Offers Outdoor Tours

NEWPORT, RI — Rhode Islanders once again have the opportunity to tour the grounds of the historic Touro Synagogue in downtown Newport. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the building itself and the Loeb Visitors Center are closed.

The free tours will be offered Friday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., weather permitting. Donations will be accepted. Visitors are asked to enter through the visitors center's courtyard, between Touro and Barney Streets. Up to 15 people will be allowed into tour groups.

The 20-minute seated presentation will explain the history of the synagogue, which was dedicated in 1763 and is the oldest in the country. It is considered to be one of the most architecturally distinguished buildings of its time, as well as a symbol or religious liberty.

Masks will be required and social distancing measures will be in effect. Reservations are not required.

Because the facilities are closed, there will be no restrooms available onsite.
