Obituary: Olivia Oliveira, 95, Happiest with a Kitchen Full of People

Olivia Pacheco (Caeano Barella) Oliveira, 95 of Lee Avenue, Newport, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2015.

Olivia Pacheco (Caeano Barella) Oliveira, 95 of Lee Avenue, Newport, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at the Grand Islander Center in Middletown. She was the wife of the late Joseph Oliveira.

Born in Newport, RI on October 2, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Emily Barella. Olivia married Joseph Oliveira on December 15, 1945 in Ribera Grande, Azores. She worked as a press operator at the Valeteria and Metropolitan Cleaners in Newport. She loved raising flowers, crocheting, walking around Newport, cooking for herself and everyone around her. Olivia was happiest when her kitchen was full of people, food and laughter. She wanted to be remembered as the “lady who rode the bus”. She will be dearly missed by all her family and friends.

Olivia is survived by her son, Louis Oliveira and his wife Sara of Portsmouth, grandchildren, Benjamin Oliveira of Providence and Ella Oliveira of Portsmouth, great grandchildren, Joshua and Elijah Heflin and Nylah Oliveira and many nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Carmen Oliveira, and sister of the late Mary Martin, Manuel Barella, Edith Furna, Rosie Creador, and Joseph Pacheco Caeano.

The family would like to thank the Grand Islander Center for their great care they gave to Mrs. Oliveira these past 4 years.

Visiting hours will be held Monday, August 31, 2015 at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport from 5-7 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at St. Mary’s Church, Newport at 10:30 am. Burial St. Columba Cemetery, Brown’s Lane, Middletown.

Donations may be made in Olivia’s memory to the Grand Islander Activities Fund, 333 Green End Ave., Middletown, RI 02842.
