NEWPORT, RI—Shoppers did come to the downtown on Small Business Saturday. People strolled along with cups of hot chocolate and coffees and seemed to be enjoying the shopping.
American Express started Small Business Saturday on Nov. 27, 2010 to encourage consumers to patronize small, local businesses, including restaurants.
Newport is not yet all decked out for the holidays yet. The decorations were up in some Bellevue Avenue stores and shops by the waterfront, but the official Christmas tree lighting is still to come.
