Photo of Obama in Newport Picked by White House Photographer as One of 2014's Best

President Obama watching a sunset at Brenton Point has been chosen by White House photographer Pete Souza as one of 2014's best.

A photograph of President Barack Obama watching a late-summer sunset at Brenton Point in Newport has been selected by White House Photographer Pete Souza as one of his top photos of the year.

Every year at the end of the year, for a look back, the official White House photographer chooses a selection of images from one of the countless photos he takes of the President in action.

The photo shows a silhouetted Obama looking to his left, his right arm bent at the elbow, as he gazes out at the water. The setting sun is blocked by his frame, which in turn appears to emit an aura.

Brenton Point is a special place in Newport, which offers stunning views of the waters of both Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Brenton Point State Park is one of Rhode Island’s favorite state parks and is located midway along the acclaimed Ocean Drive.

Souza said he won a bet along with taking the dramatic photo.

It was Aug. 29 and Obama, en route to a fundraiser, was due to touch down in Marine One at Brenton Point.

Souza, who was on the second helicopter, arrived moments before the President’s chopper touched down.

“I bet one of the advance staff that after landing, instead of walking to the motorcade, the President would walk across the road to view the ocean at sunset,” Souza said. “I won the bet.”
