Photos: Newport Runners Take First and Second in All Saints Road Race

Walkers and runners really "get moving" at the first "Let's Get Moving" five-mile run to benefit the All Saints Academy scholarship fund.

Cool breezes and sunny skies greeted participants this Saturday in Common Fence Point for the first "Let's Get Moving" road race to benefit the scholarship fund for All Saints Academy in Middletown.

Families, students and runners showed up to support the five-mile run and one-mile family walk, a scenic stroll around beautiful Taylor's Point with peaceful views of Narragansett Bay.

Brendan Doolan, 37, of Newport and David Elkeland, 37, of Newport, took first and second place.

The event, brainchild of All Saints Academy Administrative Assistant Moira Maloney, is the first of its kind for the school. Parent Jackie Grinell hopes it continues.

The road race "is such a great event," she said. "It gets kids out of the house and gets them motivated to exercise and be outdoors."

Although only about 30 participants were on hand, Maloney is confident that the event was a success.

"Mother Nature was good to us today and we did have a good turn-out for a first time event."

The monies raised support various scholarships for the school, which promotes a "wholeness and holiness" attitude.

Maloney believes the school "provides a solid foundation which can carry a person through a lifetime, regardless of religious beliefs."

Brendon Doolan was the first place finisher. For more race results, visit www.coolrunnings.com.
