Pic of the Day: Foggy Bay Floats Pell Bridge Away
Oral R. Carter captured this dreamy moment on a hazy waning summer day as fog hid the feet of the Claiborne Pell Bridge in Newport.
As if a portal to another universe or a highway from the heavens, the Claiborne Pell Bridge arched across Narragansett Bay for a brief moment on Friday with no beginning, end or bottom.
At least that’s how it appeared from the vantage point of Oral R. Carter, who took these photos with a good Nikon point and shoot with a good zoom lens at around mid-day.
The self described “Reed Timmer” of Newport, Carter’s followers on Twitter have come to expect great photos of the city and surrounding sights.

These photos were taken from Goat Island, he said.
The surreal scene lasted for a short time, the fog gradually burned off by the sun. Ephemeral visual pleasures are a way of life for people who live along Narragansett Bay. The peak of a sunset lasts for just a few seconds, for example. And bridges that float in space eventually come back to the toll both and down to earth.
