A fire in two historic homes on Second Street killed a dog and sent a firefighter to the hospital for heat exhaustion.

NEWPORT, RI —A fire in two historic homes on Second Street killed a dog and sent a firefighter to the hospital for heat exhaustion. The fire marshal is still at the scene, and the cause remains under investigation, Capt. Michael Eyre said. The first call came at 11:15 p.m.
"It appears the fire started at 18 Second St. and spread to 20 Second St.," he said.
The dog was in 18 Second St.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital but is ok, he said. He was treated for heat exhaustion and released.
