Police Arrest One After Fight in Long Wharf Pub

Robert Costello, 53, of Newport, was charged with simple assault and battery after he allegedly started a fight inside Celtica.

NEWPORT, RI—Robert Costello, 53, of Newport was charged on Sunday night with simple assault and battery; vandalism, malicious injury to property; and disorderly conduct after witnesses said he charged another patron inside a pub on Long Wharf.

Police allege Costello was fighting and breaking beer bottles. Witnesses said he threw a bar chair at the bartender. He also allegedly kicked someone in the groin, threw a punch into a victim's cheek and pulled a Keno machine off the wall.

The bartender told officers she was in the kitchen when the trouble started. She heard yelling and the chairs being thrown around. Costello was allegedly fighting with two people. A witness told police they had been sitting at tables when Costello suddenly jumped up and went after another patron.

When police arrived, Costello and several other people were outside the pub.

He was arrested at 11:55 p.m., police said.
