Police ID Diver who Died in Newport Waters

Newport police have identified the man who died after his diving equipment failed near Ida Lewis Rock as 58-year-old Mark Gruchy of Middletown.

Gruchy was pulled from the water near Fort Adams and Ida Lewis Yacht Club at around 7 p.m. Sunday after reports that he had not been heard from for about an hour.

Members of the Newport Fire Department, Newport police and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene and the Gruchy was transported to Newport Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Two bystanders saw him in the water, according to reports, and helped responders at the scene.

Emergency personnel administered CPR at the scene and during the transport to the hospital.
