A second woman became involved in the argument and when she started to call 911, Ortiz told police that he grabbed the phone and smashed it. He then pushed her to the ground.

Police took Ortiz into custody without incident and he was due to be arraigned Tuesday morning.

Both women corroborated Ortiz’s account of the incident and said they were not seriously hurt.

WARRANT

Police charged William Kenneth Waddington, 25, with a warrant Aug. 4 after he was caught hanging out on the beach at Brenton Point Park after hours by state Department of Environmental Management officers.

Police said they were dispatched to the area at nearly 3 a.m. for a report of three people being in the park after hours, including one with a warrant.

Upon arrival, police found Waddington and two 19-year-old women who said they met him about four hours ago on Thames Street and he invited them to a beach he knew off Ocean Road.

Waddington got into their car and they went to the beach where he reportedly became “weird,” the females said. When asked to elaborate, they told officers that he kept talking about being arrested in the past and working at a nearby restaurant. When they became uncomfortable, they decided to leave and started walking back to the car.

Waddington followed and that was right when the DEM showed up. As the women walked to their car Waddington stopped, raised his hands and said “I have a warrant.”

DEM contacted Newport Police, who took Waddington into custody without incident.

The outstanding warrant was for failing to appear on a Second Division District Court charge of domestic vandalism.
