Police Log: Pot Possession, Drinking in Public, $16 Handbag Stolen from Walmart

The following arrest and incident reports were reported by Newport police. They do not indicate a conviction.

MARIJUANA

Newport Police charged Catrina Greene, 24, of 18 John Chafee Blvd., Newport, with marijuana possession early Wednesday morning after she was in a car that was stopped for not using a turn signal and officers found a small bag of pot in her possession.

Police said they stopped the car at at around 2:20 a.m. after the driver, identified as a 22-year-old Middletown man, failed to signal while turning onto Malbone Road from Bedlow Avenue.

The officer reportedly saw pieces of shredded up cigar wrapper on both Greene and the driver’s laps along with pieces of marijuana throughout the car.

Another passenger in the rear seat also had a bag of pot, police said, but it was a small amount and he produced a medical marijuana card and was not charged.

Greene, however, did not produce a card and was issued a summons to appear in Municipal Court on Aug. 7.

The driver was cited for failing to use a turn signal, which carries an $85 fine if he does not choose to contest the charge on Aug. 25 in Municipal Court.

PUBLIC DRINKING
Police charged David John Vandermyde, 45, o Newport, with public drinking on Tuesday after he seen by an officer as he took a swig from a bottle of vodka at the corner of Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard and Pond Avenue at 4:35 p.m.

Officers were searching the area for a report of a suspicious person who matched Vandermyde’s description when the officer spotted him and saw him take a sip from the bottle.

SHOPLIFTING

Police charged Jennifer L. Dawson, 28, of 1 Dubois St., Portsmouth, with shoplifting on Tuesday after she allegedly stole a $16 handbag from the Walmart on Connell Highway at around 4:30 p.m.

Dawson reportedly took the handbag, removed the stuffing and tags and put her own purse inside.

She was stopped by a store security officer who brought her back inside to wait for police to show up.

Dawson was later released with a Aug. 13 District Court summons for shoplifting.

The loss prevention officer told police that Dawson went into the store with another woman who was recognized for a past incident at the store. As a result, she was issued a no-trespass order.

DOMESTIC

Police charged Maureen Mary Taylor, 53, of 13 Beech Tree St., Newport, with domestic simple assault Tuesday at 12:08 a.m.

Police said they responded to the address for a report of a disturbance. After an invetisgation, police determined that Taylor clawed at a man asking her to leave the house, causing minor injuries.

WARRANT

A man wanted for allegedly slapping a woman in the face on July 24 turned himself in to police on July 29, police said.

Thomas H. Wilson, 26, of 20 Chapel St., Newport, had an adtive warrant for a simple assault charge when he turned himself in at the Newport County Court House at around 11 am.

The warrant was issued after officer responded to an Edgar Court apartment where a woman said she had just been slapped across the face with an open hand by Wilson.

Officers said the woman had several red marks on her cheek
