ASSAULT
Police charged Jerome Joseph Callaghan, 58, of 322 Mitchells Lane, Middletown, with simple assault early Tuesday morning after he allegedly ripped the shirt off a bartender at Fastnet Pub while being escorted out the door.
Police said they arrived at the bar at around 12:30 a.m. and a group of patrons and staff were holding Callaghan to the ground to keep him from fleeing.
A bartender told police that Callaghan is not welcome at the bar because of previous incidents. While working his shift, the bartender noticed Callaghan in the bar yelling at another bartender.
Staff began to escort Callaghan outside and at the front door, he allegedly grabbed the bartender’s shirt, yanking it and tearing it from his body.
He also threw a punch, according to a police report, but missed.
It was then that the group of patrons and staff brought Callaghan to the ground and held him until police arrived.
The bartender was not seriously hurt and declined medical treatment.
Callaghan reportedly was uncooperative during the booking process and police were unable to take photographs or fingerprints.
A no-trespass order was issued and Callaghan was held overnight for arraignment Tuesday morning.
