Police Seize Weapons Cache From Local Teen after Domestic Incident
Police said the Newport man, 18, was the subject of a search early Wednesday morning after police believed he could be carrying a weapon.
Newport police seized a cache of weapons and ammunition from an 18-year-old Newport man's bedroom and nearby hiding spot after he allegedly smashed up a house in a domestic incident that led to police arresting him hours later at gunpoint in the street after a search.
Police said Andrew Michael Loyola, 18, of Newport, is charged with domestic failure to relinquish a telephone, domestic vandalism and domestic disorderly conduct. His arrest came after a search that began with a call reporting a domestic dispute.
The caller said Loyola had left the scene and was carrying a weapon "larger than a handgun," according to a police report.
At the house, police said there was damage and signs of a argument. Loyola's bedroom door was off its hinges and inside, officers noticed shotgun rounds, rifle ammunition, two pellet air soft guns and several knives.
Officers fanned out and followed several leads in an effort to track him down. They learned that he frequented multiple addresses and eventually, came upon him near the Garfield Street area. He was arrested at gunpoint at the corner of Garfield and Halsey Streets at 1:56 a.m.
He reportedly was unarmed at the time of his arrest.
While in police custody, Loyola brought police to the basement of another Garfield Street address where he showed them a rifle and shotgun. Police said the resident of the house said he did have permission to be down there.
All told, police seized a 12 gauge shotgun, an AR .22 caliber rifle, an airsoft pistol, pellet rifle, lever action pellet rifle, a crate of 12 gauge and 7.62 ammunition, a 12 gauge ammunition can, another box of 12 gauge ammunition, an eight-inch knife, a six-inch knife and a two inch knife.
Loyola was due to be arraigned on Wednesday.
Police said Loyola was taken to Newport Hospital due to intoxication and other medical issues.
