Rhode Island Named In The Top 10 States For Women

Rhode Island is one of the best states in the country for women, according to a new study from WalletHub. The Ocean State was ranked ninth in the country, excelling in preventative health care for women and insurance rates.

To calculate the ranking, WalletHub considered two main categories: "Women’s Economic and Social Well-Being" and "Women’s Health and Safety." Within these broad categories were more than a dozen metrics, including wages, job security, depression rates, life expectancy and more. These individual scores were weighed to create a score out of 100, which was used to determine the final ranking.

"When we begin to talk about how 'women' fare when it comes to the states they live in, it is essential we talk about which women," Jo Reger, the gender and society head at Oakland University, told WalletHub. "While the temptation of some research is to make 'women' a universal category, women of different races, ethnicities, religions, education level and sexual and gender identities fare very differently depending on the environment around them."

Nearby Massachusetts came in first place, praised for having the nation's lowest uninsured rate and best preventative health care.

Rhode Island also has low uninsured rates for women, and ranks third for preventative health care. Here's a look at how Rhode Island fared in each of the main categories.
