RI Weather: Advisory In Effect Ahead Of Winter Storm

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory ahead of an overnight storm expected to make for a slick commute on Thursday morning. There isn't expected to be much accumulation of snow, but a coating of ice is expected to cover untreated roads.

"[There is] high confidence that a wintry mix will impact the Thursday morning commute," the National Weather Service said. "While this will not be a significant storm, motorists should expect untreated roads to be snow/ice covered."

Here in Rhode Island, the precipitation is expected to start as snow and sleet between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., changing over into snow mixed with freezing rain after 5 a.m. The advisory will be in place from 1 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Expect rain and sleet until about 8 a.m., changing over to all rain later in the morning. The rain is likely to continue throughout the day Thursday and into Friday, with a chance of snow on Saturday night.

Rain, possibly mixed with freezing rain, becoming all rain after 8 a.m. Patchy fog between 11 a.m. and noon. High near 43. East wind 5 to 8 mph becoming north in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday Night
Rain. Low around 39. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 7 mph in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Friday
Rain, mainly before 4 p.m. High near 44. Northeast wind 10 to 13 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent.
