RI Weather: Snow Details, Hour-By-Hour Forecast

It'll be 'briefly heavy' this afternoon, then just a total mess. Plus, pretty dang cold.

Don't let March's nor'easter splurge desensitize you. The National Weather Service says it will look "wintry" for a few hours this afternoon, with "briefly heavy" snow, slushy mix, and real-feel temperatures in the low 20s.

The shovels shouldn't be too necessary. Snow accumulation is expected to be limited to mostly non-paved surfaces like grass and on top of cars. Whatever accumulation does occur will likely be between a dusting and 2-3 inches.

You can see the timeline of the snow and when it will be transitioning to rain below. It will be snowing for about three hours - from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. - in most of Rhode Island. By about 4 p.m. there should be only rain.

The snow is "likely (to) become moderate to perhaps briefly heavy for an hour or two before mixing with sleet and then changing over to rain," the NWS said.

Even April can at times see major storms. Today is actually the 37-year anniversary of the Blizzard of '82, when more than 7 inches fell in Providence and more than 13 inches fell in Boston.
