Safely Celebrate Fall In RI During The Coronavirus Pandemic

'Tis the season for hayrides, pumpkin patches, apple picking and more. This year, it's important to stay safe.

Fall has arrived in full force in Rhode Island, and with it the season of pumpkin carving, apple picking and hayrides. There’s still a way to have fall fun amid the coronavirus pandemic, though it’s important to take extra precautions to keep yourself and others safe.

The most important thing is to maintain social distance and wear face coverings, even when outside. Masks should fit snugly but comfortably, covering the nose, mouth and chin. A face shield on its own is not sufficient, according to the Rhode Island Department of Health. Children under 2 years old and anyone with a breathing issue should not wear a mask.

When heading out for fall activities, keep groups small, ideally just those within the immediate household. Keep at least 6 feet away from other groups, and clean hands frequently with hand sanitizer or soap and water. Outdoor activities are considered safer due to the air exchange.

Farmers’ market, hayrides and other popular fall spots should all have COVID-19 signage posted at the entrance with information about mask-wearing and symptom screening. Businesses are required to clean and sanitize high-touch areas frequently, and enforce social distancing on hayrides and other activities.

More information from the Department of Health is available here.
