Save The Bay Aquarium Closed Until Further Notice [PHOTOS]

The aquarium sustained significant damage from Hurricane Sandy.

The Save The Bay Aquarium is closed until further notice after sustaining significant damage from Hurricane Sandy.

Located on Easton’s Beach, the Aquarium was directly in the path of swells and surf topping 12 feet at the height of the storm.  Water, sand, rocks, and other debris now litter nearly every square inch of the facility. It is uncertain when the Aquarium will re-open to the public.

“Our staff did an amazing job in the immediate aftermath of the storm,” said Save The Bay Executive Director Jonathan Stone.  “Every crab, dogfish, ray, flounder, seahorse, and jellyfish survived and has been relocated.”

The Mystic Aquarium and Aquidneck Lobster Company are providing a temporary haven for many ofthe Aquarium animals. Others were relocated to Save The Bay’s Bay Center in Providence.

The public is welcome to visit the Center during normal business hours.  More than a dozen tanks with turtles, fish, sea urchins, and sea stars have been set up.
