The cleanup is sponsored by Clean Ocean Access β€” a group of volunteers doing yeoman’s work on Aquidneck Island’s shoreline β€” along with Saliors for the Sea.

Volunteers will fan out from The Hibernian Hall to New York Yacht Club. There will be bags and gloves available at the King Park swim area.

The cleanup and screening takes place at King Park on Wellington Avenue in Newport and will last until 6:30 p.m. or so, followed by music by Lainey Dionne featuring Izza Marcil from 6 to 7:15 p.m.

At the same time, as usual with newportFILM events, there will be an armada of vendors and food trucks to keep you sated after combing the shore for trash and debris and during the screening of Mission Blue, which explores the wonders of the sea and the the manmade threats its creatures are facing.

Described as a call to action to save the world’s sea, directors Fisher Stevens (The Cove) and Robert Nixon (Gorillas in the Mist) follow Dr. Syliva Earle as she works to protect the ocean from pollution, overfishing and climate change.

Following the screening, guests will have a chance to ask questions of Nixon for an exclusive Q&A.
