Scorching Weather Breaks 71-Year-Old Temperature Record
The temperature reached 99 degrees at T.F. Green Airport, shattering the record of 94 degrees set in 1949.
WARWICK, RI — Rhode Island smashed it's previous high temperature record Tuesday, set more than seven decades ago.
In 1949, the temperature peaked at T.F. Green Airport at 94 degrees, a record that was broken before noon. At 11:33 a.m., the airport logged 96 degrees, which only climbed from there. By 1:06 p.m., the temperature reached 99 degrees at the airport, according to the National Weather Service.
Heat indices were in the triple-digits for much of the day Tuesday. In the morning, the NWS upgraded the heat advisory to an excessive heat warning, in place until 8 p.m.

Cells of thunderstorms prompted a flood warning for parts of Kent and Providence counties, with the possibility for localized street flooding from heavy downpours.
"If you encounter flooded roadways, turn around, don't drown!" NWS said.

The extreme temperatures are expected to hang around for a few more days, with highs ranging from the low 90s to mid 80s for the remainder of the week.
