Shooting Threat Leads To Standoff At Newport Home And Arrest: Cops

NEWPORT, RI — A threat to shoot a man with a pistol led to a standoff at a Newport home and ended with an arrest, police said.

Officers were sent to a residence on Dudley Avenue near West Main Road for a report of a man assaulting and threatening to shoot another man with a pistol about 3:45 p.m. Monday, the Newport Police Department said in a media release.

When officers arrived, the man accused of the assault and threat, 32-year-old Khaleel Mills, fled into the Dudley Avenue residence, the release said.

Officers set up a perimeter and Newport County Special Response Team Crisis Negotiators established contact with Mr. Mills, according to the release.

"At 7:35 p.m., after several hours of negotiations, Mr. Mills agreed to exit the residence and was taken into custody without incident," the release said.

Mills was taken to the Newport police station and was to be arraigned Tuesday on charges of possession of a firearm while committing a crime of violence, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, domestic assault on a person over 60 years old, domestic disorderly conduct and violation of a no-contact order.
