SSV Oliver Hazard Perry: Nine Day Voyage Underway For Aquidneck

The students left Philadelphia June 2 and are due at Fort Adams on June 11.

From SSV Oliver Hazard Perry:To fulfill its educational mission that includes a commitment to Aquidneck Island students, the non-profit organization Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island (OHPRI) is hosting 21 students from Rogers High School, Portsmouth High School and the MET School on a nine-day voyage aboard Rhode Island’s Official Sailing Education Vessel

SSV Oliver Hazard Perry. The student trainees, a mix of 9th through 11th graders between the ages of 14 and 17, are accompanied by two teacher chaperones. They boarded the 200 foot three-masted Class A Tall Ship in Philadelphia on June 2, at the conclusion of the vessel’s participation in the Sail Philadelphia Tall Ships Festival.

Perry, which has a professional crew of 19, currently is sailing from Philadelphia to Newport, where it has a permanent berth at Fort Adams State Park. The students are scheduled to disembark on Monday, June 11. The voyage is funded by the Hamilton Family Foundation, Newport Fed Charitable Foundation and BankNewport.
