Suspect in Restaurant Break-In Arrested

Newport police arrested a 31-year-old man who has been living on the streets for allegedly breaking into a restaurant to steal food.

A 31-year-old man with a last known address in Charlotte, NC., was arrested by Newport Police on Wednesday for breaking into La Forge restaurant and Canfield House this past week to steal food and drinks.

Police said Jonathan William Ross, 31, has been living in Newport and spending time in various locations.

On Saturday, police said they got a report from the owner of the Canfield House that Ross was seen going in and taking a ginger beer from a cabinet.

On Sunday, he allegedly broke into La Forge Restaurant, police said.

On Wednesday, police, who had by now obtained a warrant for Ross’ arrest, tracked him down to a bench at the tennis courts on King Street.

Ross reportedly said that he broke into the restaurant “just for food and to find bread.”

He was taken into custody without incident and was later released after an initial appearance in Second Division District Court in Newport on $1,000 surety bail.

He was charged with felony breaking and entering and misdemeanor larceny.

He is due to return to court on Sept. 2 for a pretrial conference on the misdemeanor charge and on Oct. 1 for an attorney general screening conference on the felony charge.
