Suspect Stole Rescue Squad Keys: Newport Police Allege

Medics were treating a child inside a Jade Way home when a suspect allegedly reached in the rescue squad window and grabbed the keys.

NEWPORT, RI—Malachi Stanley, 19, homeless of Newport, was charged Sunday Aug. 6 at 9:40 p.m. with Larceny (under $1,500.) He also was charged with five other misdemeanors in connection with an incident on Jade Way. According to the arrest report, Newport Fire Department medics were working on an injured child inside a Jade Way house when Stanley allegedly smashed his skateboard on the front door. A witness said at one point Stanley was sitting on her moped and allegedly hitting it with a metal pipe. He would not move when she told him it was not allowed, she said. Firefighters said the rescue squad's engine was left on and was running outside the house, but when firefighters went outside, the engine was off. Nobody saw anyone enter the rescue squad, but another witness said Stanley reached inside the rescue's window, apparently took something; and then ran off.

Police allege he stole the keys to Rescue 1. In addition to the larceny, he was charged with injuring or tampering with vehicles; vandalism (injury to property); disorderly conduct; attempted larceny (under $1,500) from a motor vehicle and obstructing an officer. Officers apprehended and searched him but did nit find the keys.
