Sweltering Temperatures To Bring Triple-Digit Heat Index To RI

After several beautiful days of low humidity and comfortable temperatures in Rhode Island, sweltering weather is in the forecast. Sunday and Monday are expected to be the worst, with heat indices reaching the triple-digits in several areas of the state.

The National Weather Service said heat advisories are expected from Sunday through Thursday. The hot weather is expected to arrive Saturday, with highs temperatures topping out in the high 80s. Temperatures are only expected to climb from there, reaching 90 degrees or higher Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

To avoid heat stroke or exhaustion, Rhode Islanders are reminded to stay hydrated, limit their time outdoors and strenuous activity.

Pets are susceptible to the heat, as well, and should be kept inside in extreme temperatures. Never leave a pet in a vehicle, limit exercise and avoid walking animals on asphalt, which can burn paws when hot, officials said. Signs of heat stroke in a dog include excessive panting, discolored gums and mobility issues, according to the North Kingstown Animal Hospital.
