Threat to Spatula-Whip Fellow Employee Results In Disorderly Conduct Charge

An employee at the Viking Hotel arrived at work drunk, and an argument started, police allege.

NEWPORT, RI — Matthew J. Schonfarber, 25, of Warwick, faces a Disorderly Conduct charge. Police said a fellow employee at the Hotel Viking in Newport complained Schonfarber threatened him. He allegedly threatened to beat up the co-worker with a spatula.

According to the arrest report, the victim, also a hotel employee, said Schonfarber came to work intoxicated Sunday and was not doing a proper job. After he reprimanded him, Schonfarber picked up the spatula and made threats, the employee claimed. Then he allegedly tried to lure him into an area of the kitchen where there are no cameras and provoke a fight. Ultimately, he was asked to leave the hotel. But then he allegedly sent text messages saying his three friends were going to find the co-worker.

Police found Schonfarber at 6:29 p.m. Sunday near Freebody and Memorial. They took him into custody.
