On Thursday, "Chicest" Picnic at Dior and I Screening will Win

If there ever was a decidedly Newport event, this would be it.

newportFILM’s outdoor screening on Thursday of Dior and I, a film that offers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings at the House of Christian Dior as Raf Simons creates his first Haute Couture collection, is just one small part of a elegant night.

Starting at 5 p.m., visitors to Rough Point — Doris Duke’s Newport home — will get to see the latest exhibit, No Rules: The Personal Style of Doris Duke. And only on Thursday, additional Doris Duke pieces designed by Dior will be on display.

At the same time, YellowRed will be performing their music as attendees spread out their blankets and open up picnic baskets to enjoy an evening bite as sunset approaches.

With such a remarkable venue as Rough Point as the background for the evening’s festivities, newportFILM has upped the ante with a “chicest picnic” contest.

In the spirit of Dior style, judges will be looking out for the “most fabulous al fresco dining display” with winners getting prizes that include gift certificates to Stoneacre Pantry, wine, jewelry, a boat bag and more.

Don’t worry about the food so much, since there will be a slew of on-site food vendors to help complete your spread. Instead, focus on the display itself. If there was ever a reason to get dolled up for a film screening, this is it.

The folks at newportFILM have set up a Pintrest board to offer some inspiration.

For the film itself, the showing begins around sunset at 7:45 p.m. and it will be followed with a post film Q&A with director Frederic Tcheng.

A $5 donation is suggested for the film.

Along with the food vendors, there’s a cash bar on site, Tallulah on Thames will have their Taco Cart, Le Petit Gourmet and Boru Noodle Bar will be there and enjoy a free bike valet courtesy of Bike Newport, who’ll also offer low-cost tuneups for your ride.
