Trump's RI Job Approval Is Among Country's Worst: Poll

One of the president's lowest net approval rating in the country is right here in Rhode Island. Morning Consult released a poll Tuesday that showed only 38 percent of residents approve of President Trump's job in the Oval Office, while 59 percent disapproved. That net difference of -21 percent was the seventh lowest in America.

Rhode Island not cozying up to Trump isn't breaking news, but the net difference is actually a major swing from what it was in January 2017. When Trump was sworn in, he had a 42 percent approval rating in Rhode Island and a 36 percent disapproval rating, which was a net difference of -4. That was tied for the fifth-lowest mark at the time with Massachusetts.

Trump didn't start out very popular in Rhode Island, winning just 38.9 percent of the vote in the 2016 election. But in staunchly Democratic Rhode Island, that 38.9 percent was more than any other Republican since 2000. Rhode Island has voted Republican for president just four times, twice for Dwight David Eisenhower, once for Richard Nixon (in 1972), and once for Ronald Reagan (in 1984).

Neighboring Massachusetts had the lowest net rating of Trump's job performance in the country, coming in at -27.

Only 22 states had a positive net view of the president's job performance in Morning Consult's latest poll; That's down from 38 states at the start of his presidency. Trump's highest net approval rating in Tuesday's poll was 31 percent in Wyoming. His highest overall approval rating was 63 percent in West Virginia and Alabama. His highest disapproval rating was 77 percent in the District of Columbia.
