Twin River Casino Taking Bigger Hit Than Expected As Layoffs Loom
Report says Rhode Island property will let go up to 100 employees as business slides in the face of competition from Encore Boston Harbor.
PROVIDENCE, RI - Twin River Casino could layoff nearly 100 dealers and floor supervisors as it struggles to deal with competition from the new Encore Boston Harbor in Everett, Massachusetts. Amid slumping stock prices and sales, WPRI reported on Friday that up to 65 card dealers could be let go along with the floor supervisors that were expected to be laid off earlier this week.
The layoffs come as Encore Boston Harbor hit it big at the tables in its first full month of operation as the Everett, Massachusetts resort bucked an industry trend by pulling in more revenue through card and table games than it did through slot machines in its first six weeks.
Twin River Worldwide Holdings, Inc., which operates the casino, has seen its stock slump more than 38 percent since is April high with staff reductions now impending as Twin River tries to wait out the initial push of the glitzy new resort to the north and the end of the traditionally slower summer season.
