Upcoming newportFILM Screenings cover Broadway's "Annie," USSR's Hockey Dynasty

"Annie: It's the Hard-Knock Life, from Script to Stage," and "Red Army" will be screened on Feb. 17.

A behind-the-scenes look at the making of a Broadway production number. The Soviet Union and what is considered the most successful sports dynasty in history: the Red Army Hockey Team.

Two vastly different subjects, but they’ll both come come alive on the screen at Jane Pickens Theater in Newport on Feb. 17 in two separate screenings.

At 10 a.m., “Annie: It’s the Hard-Knock Life, from Script to Stage” will begin after an hour open mic and karaoke of Annie musical favorites on the Jane Pickens Theater’s stage.

The film offers a deep look at the revival of ”Annie” and what it takes to put Broadway-worthy productions to stage as Tony award-winning theater heavyweights butt heads.

The production number in question is the well-known song “It’s the Hard Knock Life” and “tension mounts as they work to prepare a cast of young actors for Opening Night,” according to the film’s IMDB description.

Later, at 6 p.m., enjoy hors d’oeuvres courtesy of Boru Noodle Bar and a cash bar before settling in for the screening of “Red Army” at 7 p.m.

The film is “a human story that transcends decades, borders and ideologies,” says Time Magazine.

Werner Herzog directs this feature documentary that covers the Soviet Union and the Red Army hockey team.

The film is told from the perspective of captain Slava Fetisov and “the story portrays his transformation from national hero to political enemy. From the USSR to Russia, the film examines how sport mirrors social and cultural movements and parallels the rise and fall of the Red Army team with the Soviet Union.”

Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for student.
