Wakefield Native Installed As New Naval Station Newport Commander

Capt. Ian Johnson is the new commanding officer.

NEWPORT, RI—South Kingstown native Capt. Ian Johnson is the new commanding officer at Naval Station Newport. According to the Navy's Newport Navalog, he was installed Friday morning. A graduate of South Kingstown High, he earned a bachelor's degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the United States Naval Academy in 1994. According to the publication, he's has numerous deployments, "served as the Deputy Commander of Submarine Squadron SEVEN in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii from 2014-2016 and arrives in Newport following a tour as the Submarine Force Atlantic Shipyard Representative at Electric Boat, Groton, Connecticut."

Continuing with his achievements, the publication said his "personal awards include the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, three Navy Commendation Medals, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, and four Navy Achievement Medals." He replaces Capt. Dennis R.D. Boyer.
