NEWPORT, RI — The city of Newport announced weekend capacity limits at Bailey's Beach East in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus in Rhode Island. Starting Friday, 200 people will be allowed on the beach at any time.

The capacity limit will be enforced by beach staff from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday, until further notice. During the week, Newport police will monitor beaches to watch for overcrowding.

This summer, the Rhode Island Department of Health encouraged residents to practice social distancing on beaches, wearing a mask in crowded or public areas and using online ordering for concessions when available. Masks are not needed when swimming or sitting on a beach blanket away from others.
