West Warwick Man Charged with DUI, Narcotics Possession Early Monday

Police said Gregory McFrederick denied drinking but smelled like alcohol and failed a field sobriety test.

Newport police charged Gregory McFrederick, 55, of 51 Coit Ave., West Warwick, with driving under the influence, refusing a chemical test and narcotics possession early Monday morning.

Police said McFrederick was stopped at around 1:50 a.m. after an officer on patrol saw him swerve erratically on Thames Street, veering towards some parked cars before abruptly correcting himself. He then failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Thames and Narragansett and drove in the wrong direction on a one-lane portion of Thames Street.

Once stopped, McFredrick reportedly smelled like alcohol though he denied drinking, telling police “I’m an upstanding citizen and I would never drink and drive.”
