Where To Commemorate 9/11 In Rhode Island

Ceremonies and memorials across Rhode Island will honor the 2,997 people who were killed in the 9/11 terror attacks.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Communities throughout Rhode Island will commemorate the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks Wednesday, Sept. 11. Ceremonies and memorials across the state will honor the 2,997 people who were killed in plane hijacking attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon and aboard Flight 93.

See below for a list of some events where Rhode Island residents can gather to mourn, reflect, pray and honor those who were lost:

State Officials Unveiling Memorial Plaque

A plaque displaying the names of the nine Rhode Islanders who died on 9/11 will be unveiled in the bell area of the State House at 82 Smith St. in Providence. Gov. Gina Raimondo, Rep. Samuel Azzinaro, D-Westerly, Sen. Harold Metts, D-Providence, and family members of the nine victims will participate in the ceremony. The names on the plaque include David Lawrence Angell, Carol Marie Bouchard, Mark Lawrence Charette, James Edward Hayden, Amy Nicole Jarret, Kathryn Laborie, Shawn Nassaney, Renee Tetreault Newell and Jessica Leigh Sachs.

Oakland Beach Memorial

A remembrance ceremony will take place on Oakland Beach in Warwick at 10:15 a.m. There will be a moment of silence at 10:28 a.m., followed by prayers, readings, flag plantings, a tribute poem and taps at the seawall. Rep. Camille Vella-Wilkinson, D-Warwick, Rep. Joseph Solomon Jr., D-Warwick, and Mayor Joseph J. Solomon will speak at the ceremony. At sunset, there will be a candlelight vigil.

Woonsocket

A remembrance ceremony is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at the Woonsocket Fire Department at 5 Cumberland Hill Road. Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt and Police Chief Thomas Oates will speak. Local clergy will lead invocation and a moment of silence.

West Warwick Evening Ceremony

Local scout troops, Rhode Island Jaycees, local veterans councils and volunteers will host a remembrance ceremony at the Riverpoint Community Park in West Warwick from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The park is located at 110 Hay St.

New England Institute of Technology Brings Several Communities Together

The New England Institute of Technology in East Greenwich will bring several communites together for a 9/11 remembrance ceremony. Police from East Greenwich, Coventry, Cranston, South Kingstown and Warwick will join students for readings and a wreath-laying ceremony. The event starts at 11:30 a.m. at 1 New England Tech Boulevard.
