Winthrop Arrested Again, Held Without Bail at ACI

Police said Christian Winthrop, 42, hit and threw a Newport man down a flight of stairs after entering a Spring Street apartment last week.

The owner of a local entertainment blog and the son of a former Mayor has been arrested again.

Police said Christian Winthrop, 42, of 412 Bellevue Ave., turned himself in to police on Tuesday after an investigation into an alleged assault that occurred last week at a Spring Street apartment.

According to a police report, officers were dispatched to the apartment at around 2:25 a.m. on Jan. 24 for a report of an assault.

The victim, identified by police as a 47-year-old Newport man, told police that he was at a female friend’s house when Winthrop entered the apartment and began yelling at the woman, calling her derogatory names, including the C-word and “slut.”

When the victim tried to intervene, Winthrop allegedly punched him several times in the head and pushed him down the hallway stairs, police said.

The victim had a cut in the middle of his forehead and dried blood had run down the middle of his face.

After an investigation, Newport police got a warrant for Winthrop’s arrest on a charge of simple assault on Sunday.

Winthrop, the owner of The Newport Buzz website, turned himself in to police on Monday and was ordered held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston.

At the time of his arrest, Winthrop was free on personal recognizance following his arrest in September on charges of felony domestic breaking and entering and domestic simple assault. He is due to appear in Superior Court for arraignment on those charges on March 12.

On the new charges, Winthrop is due to appear in court on Feb. 10 for a status conference.
