1. Quonset beach area faces new restrictions over contamination (providencejournal.com) — North Kingstown residents who use the Quonset beach area should know that federal officials are proposing new zoning restrictions and long-term groundwater monitoring because of historic contamination from former military operations. While current municipal drinking water is unaffected, the plan would limit future groundwater use, add land-use controls, and invites public feedback at a Sept. 23 meeting in town and through written comments until Oct. 15.
2. DEM seeks public comment on amendments for Bitumur compliance (independentri.com) — Residents in North Kingstown's West Davisville neighborhood now have a chance to influence how the state cracks down on asphalt odors from Bitumar. DEM is proposing detailed changes to Rhode Island's Odor Rule, aiming to replace vague "objectionable" standards with measurable criteria and mandatory odor-control plans, and is accepting public comments through Oct. 14.
3. Apple Picking Season is Here in Rhode Island (rinewstoday.com) — Narrow Lane Orchard in North Kingstown is open for apple picking, with a nature trail, a carved Sasquatch photo spot, and popular varieties like Macoun ripening through September. The guide also rounds up other Rhode Island orchards' hours and tips, plus a candy-apple recipe, so you can plan a fall outing close to home and know what to expect before you go.
4. REGENT Completes First Crewed Flight of Composites-Intensive Viceroy Seaglider (compositesworld.com) — A North Kingstown-based company, REGENT Craft, has completed the first crewed flight of its full-scale all-electric Viceroy Seaglider over Narragansett Bay, marking a key step toward commercial service. With a new 255,000-square-foot manufacturing facility at Quonset and substantial funding and orders, REGENT is positioning the town as a hub for advanced coastal transportation and defense-related technology jobs.
