Happy Tuesday, Pawtucket! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.
First, today's weather:
Cloudy. High: 34 Low: 28.
Here are the top three stories today in Pawtucket:
- Yesterday, we reported on Sunday's deadly fire at the Coats Manor apartment complex. The cause of the blaze was still unknown at the time; after further investigation, Rhode Island State Fire Marshal Tim McLaughlin stated that it was likely an accident. As per McLaughlin, the alarms and sprinklers in the building appeared to be working, and the fire was contained to a single bedroom in one unit. (Turn to 10)
- The Pawtucket Police Department reported that a man has died after being shot Sunday night. Officers identified the victim as 28-year-old Jovani L. Velez, who was found suffering from a gunshot wound; Velez was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The shooting remains under investigation. (WJAR)
- In recognition of Black History Month, Providence Media compiled a list of history and arts groups that are cultivating Rhode Island's Black history and art. One of the featured organizations is Pawtucket's own Mixed Magic Theatre, whose programming and performances highlight the "untold and undertold stories of the African-American diaspora and beyond." From our sponsor:
Last week, we told you about our new favorite non-alcoholic go-to — the refreshingly bitter drinks from our partners at Betera. They're chef-created from natural botanicals, lightly effervescent and worthy of life beyond "Dry January." We mentioned that their Ginger-Orange was excellent; we've since tried Elderflower-Lime and loved it as well — light and floral with the perfect amount of zing. We're converts.
Enough of you took Betera up on their 15% discount on first orders for Patch Daily readers that they've extended the offer for another week. Use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — try Betera here.
