Hello, people of Pawtucket! It's me again, Nicole Fallon-Peek, your host of the Pawtucket Daily.
First, today's weather:
Cloudy with a few showers. High: 61 Low: 50.
Here are the top stories today in Pawtucket and nearby communities:
- Pawtucket is the only Rhode Island city that has not spent any of its American Rescue Plan funding and is "still waiting for more guidance from the federal government about allowable uses of the money under the law," according to the Mayor's office. Some options that have been discussed include infrastructure and affordable housing, said a spokesperson for Mayor Grebien. City officials have conducted a survey of Pawtucket residents to find out their priorities for spending, but there is no timeline yet for when decisions will be made. (WPRI 12)
- Local Indigenous Peoples in Rhode Island will gather on the corner of Roosevelt and Exchange in Pawtucket on Indigenous Peoples' Day (Oct. 11) to protest the statue of William Blackstone, a 17th century Pawtucket figure whose leadership led to the land stealing and slaughter of local Indigenous peoples. The statue was put up in August without due public process of Pawtucket's residents. As Narragansett activist Bella Noka said, "On Indigenous Peoples Day, we gather in protest to remove a recently-erected statue that continues to spread the message of the Doctrine of Discovery, a papal missive responsible for the slaughter of our Indigenous People." (Red Lake Nation News)
- Providence police have identified the victims in the Glasgow St. shooting that occurred on Sunday as Niberto Diaz, 21, and Samuel Corcoran, 29. (WPRI.com)
- Multiple people were arrested Friday following a night of out-of-control college parties, including Providence College student Dylan Curran, who was arrested for disorderly conduct after using racial expletives toward police officers. (GoLocalProv)
- Today is the final day to view "When the Colors Fade: A Queer Riot Against Corporate Pride," an exhibit at the Queer Art Collective on Exchange Street in Pawtucket. (RI Monthly)
