Here are the top stories in Pawtucket today:
- The city's first Hispanic Heritage Month Festival is coming to Pawtucket this weekend. The event is organized by the Pawtucket Hispanic Heritage Month Committee, in partnership with Mayor Donald Grebien and the city of Pawtucket. The event will take place this Friday, Oct. 15, at the Veterans Amphitheater with this year's inaugural theme being Esperanza Pawtucket. (Valley Breeze)
- Matos Bakery in Pawtucket won the First Place People's Choice Award for best empanadas as part of the first Pawtucket Central Falls Empanada Fest on Sept. 18. Organizers said the event was highly successful with more than 250 people attending and 10 restaurants serving at Slater Park. Now, the Pawtucket Planning and Redevelopment Department is proposing using $1,000 of the $1,500 remaining in the city's marketing line item for Restaurant Week on a downtown event in Pawtucket on Nov. 6. - Pawtucket's first Homeless Assistance Drive is running now through the end of Oct., providing health and hygiene necessities to the homeless population in the city. Joanne Bonollo is hosting the event independently and said she would like to see this first drive be successful, and then grow it in the future. Items being requested include socks, undergarments, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, facecloths, deodorant, towels, menstrual products, ponchos (all weather), and blankets. (Valley Breeze)
