Properly inflate tires. Only 17 percent of cars have all four tires properly inflated, yet the U.S. Department of Energy reports that proper tire inflation can improve fuel economy. Check the pressures when the tires are cold and haven’t been driven on recently. Tires should be inflated to pressure levels recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. The proper levels can be found on a sticker on the driver’s side door jamb or in the owner’s manual.
