Bay View Academy was honored to be invited to the University of Rhode Island’s Ocean Science and Exploration Center for an informative tour and a lecture by the world-renowned explorer and marine biologist, Dr. Robert Ballard. Ballard, who is most popularly credited with discovering the sunken R.M.S. Titanic, is the director of the Center.

A Bay View father, Dave Layman (North Kingstown), former news director, anchor, and frequent panelist on Rhode Island PBS’ A Lively Discussion, facilitated the tour and lecture by writing to Ballard and his team to secure Bay View’s invitation. According to Bay View science teacher, Janell Johnson (Cranston), the decision to send freshmen biology students was due to the fact that “the URI program offers many exciting educational experiences for high school students, starting as early as ninth grade. Therefore, we could expose a relatively large number of our ninth grade students to these opportunities, allowing them an ample amount of time to plan for their futures in such programs.”
Samantha Crausman of Rehoboth, MA was one of the 41 students who attended the event. Crausman enjoyed the experience so much that she has written an essay about it, which is featured on St. Mary Academy-Bay View’s website (see essay link below). According to Crausman, “this certainly was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and it was one of the best field trips I’ve ever been on!” She was so inspired by the tour and Dr. Ballard’s lecture that she says she now “can’t wait to be a part of investigating our Earth’s beautiful oceans!”
