Aquidneck Indian Council to Hold Ceremony in Local Park

The public is invited to attend the Ojibwa/Chippewa style ceremonies and potluck in Portsmouth this weekend.

The Portsmouth community is invited to a public ceremony held by the Aquidneck Indian Council on Saturday.

The Aquidneck Indian Council is a nonprofit organization to preserve mixed Native American tribal heritages and ancestral ways.

The council will perform a Healing of the Water ceremony, a naming ceremony and a pipe ceremony at Founder’s Brook Memorial Park off of Boyd’s Lane.

The public is invited to offer prayers and blessings upon a body of water for all water to be cleaned and purified in the Ojibwa/Chippewa style Healing of the Water ceremony . The Aquidneck Indian Council said the prayers will then “flow over Mother Earth and touch every other body of water that this brook is connected to.”

The ceremony will kick off at noon. The Aquidneck Indian Council posted about the event on its Facebook page.

Entertainment will be provided by the band The Soaring Eagle Singers.

Natives will be dressed in full regalia.

Attendees are asked to bring something to share to the potluck luck that will follow the ceremonies at 222 Middle Road.
