Big Support for Removing Sakonnet River Bridge Toll

A proposal to eliminate a toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge received big support at a legislative hearing last week.

Representatives of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce, transit riders, and environmental groups testified in favor of the bill, according to the Providence Journal.

State Sen. Louis DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, which includes Little Compton, Middletown, Newport, Tiverton) is the lead sponsor of a bill that would do away with the toll.

The bridge connects Tiverton and Portsmouth.
