Bites Nearby: Melville Grille's Portuguese Fish Chowder Is Contender at Cook-Off, Winner on Menu

A closer look at one of the local contenders in the Newport Chowder Cook-off this weekend reveals pleasant surprises on Narragansett Bay.

Tucked away from the mainstream of Aquidneck Island is the Melville Grille, located at the East Passage Marina in Portsmouth. Yes, it is quite a surprise to find it nestled against the bay and surrounded by all manner of boats. It is a great place to eat. Chef Scott Cowell gives dishes his own twist. Healthy options and gluten free are among his many menu choices.

This year Chef Cowell is entering his Portuguese fish chowder in the Annual Newport Chowder Cook-Off. Of course we had to try it. Cod, shrimp, and sea scallops are brought together with chourico in a creamy broth. Tasted like a winner to us!

Flatbread signature salad, ultra thin crust pizza, pasta dishes, fish and chips, pulled pork, (I overheard a guest say that the pork was very juicy) and grilled to order certified Angus burgers are anything but the usual fare.

Finally, I was able to order farfalle pomodoro with shrimp and there were no shells on the shrimp. I had to thank Chef Cowell personally for that.

Chef’s specials include prime rib (16 ounce or 12 ounce), New Bedford scallops du jour, or center cut swordfish. Also on the menu are chicken, North Atlantic salmon, scrod and rib eye.

The interior is nautical, the portions hearty, the staff is friendly and very efficient, and the prices are reasonable. There is dining al fresco during the nice weather.
