Bystanders Pull Two from Portsmouth Waters after Boat Capsizes

Bystanders took action after calls for help came from the water.

Two people were pulled from the water by good Samaritans after their boat capsized about 100 feet from shore on Thursday.

Portsmouth Fire Dep. Chief Michael P. O’Brien said that the Fire Department got a 911 call at around 2:11 p.m. reporting someone screaming from the water off Seaconnet Boulevard in Island Park.

The fire department responded with multiple units, including two chief officers, an ambulance crew, engine company and marine unit.

When the first unit arrived six minutes later, they found a group of people signaling for help from a nearby yard as two good Samaritans administered CPR to an unresponsive male.

Another man who had been riding in the boat was OK and standing on the shore.

The unresponsive man was transported to St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River and his condition was not immediately released.

O’Brien said that one or two bystanders swam out with personal flotation devices to rescue the capsized boaters, pulling them to shore.
