Art of the Passeggiata: Barnaby Evans, Creator of WaterFire, at Portsmouth Arts Guild

Please join us in welcoming distinguished artist Barnaby Evans to the Portsmouth Arts Guild, Wednesday, March 14th at 630 pm.

Barnaby Evans, who originally trained as a scientist, has been working exclusively as an artist for over 25 years.  Today, he is best known for his internationally renowned site-specific installation WaterFire which was created in its first version in 1994 in Providence as First Fire to celebrate the 10th anniversary of First Night Providence.  In June 1996, he created Second Fire for the International Sculpture Conference and the Convergence International Arts Festival in Providence.  With hundreds of volunteers and the broad support of the community, he established WaterFire as an on-going installation in 1997.  Evans' work continues to inspire its visitors, even those who have gone to experience WaterFire several times.

Much of WaterFire's mystique and allure is derived from the Italian tradition of passeggiata, meaning a gentle stroll through the main streets of an old town, usually in the pedestrian zones. In Evans' lecture on Wednesday night, he will give insight into his creation of WaterFire and the concept of passeggiata.
